Sweet systems: technologies for glycomic analysis and their integration into systems biology

Found in virtually every organism, glycans are essential molecules that play important roles almost aspect of biology. The composition glycome, the repertoire an organism or a biological sample, is often found altered many diseases, including cancer, infectious metabolic and developmental disorders. Understanding how glycosylation glycomic changes enriches our knowledge mechanisms disease progression sheds light on development novel therapeutics. However, inherent diversity glycan structures imposes challenges experimental characterization glycomes. Advances high-throughput technologies enable analysis rapid comprehensive manner. In this review, we discuss analytical methods currently used glycomics, mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography lectin microarray. Concomitant with technical advances integration glycomics into systems biology recent years. Herein elaborate some representative works from trend to underline role such integrated approaches disease.
